Former Chief Justice and present Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University Subhra Komal Mukhopadhyay was born on October 10, 1955 in Bhagalpur, West Bengal. The son of a lawyer family, he completed his MA in History from Calcutta University and LLB. In 1982, he made his debut as a lawyer of the Calcutta High Court.

After being a lawyer for 18 years, he was appointed as a regular of the Calcutta High Court on September 15, 2000. He was transferred to the Karnataka High Court on 15 April 2015 after serving as a judge in Calcutta High Court for 15 years. Justice Shubhra Kamal Mukhopadhyay was elected as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on 1 June 2015 after the then Chief Justice of Karnataka Dhirendra Hiralal was transferred. He took over as Chief Justice on 23 October 2016.

Interim Vice-Chancellor of Visva Bharati University was Nirmalyanarayan Chakraborty, after his term ended he wrote to the Governor requesting his continuation from then on. The governor acceded to his request, after which the university was without a chancellor for two months and appointed former Justice Shubhra Kamal Mukhopadhyay as the interim vice-chancellor of the new Visva Bharati University. Along with this, the state governor has formed a committee named "Peace and Social Integration" to maintain peace in the upcoming panchayat elections. The committee is headed by former justice Shubhra Komal Mukhopadhyay.
Experts fear that there will be a clash between the Raj Bhavan and the state government for the Governor's action.
