IPS Rajeev Kumar was born in 1966 in Kolkata, West Bengal to a Hindu middle class family. Rajiv was very interested in studies from a young age, he completed his primary education in a local school. Sports were his favorite along with studies, and mathematics was his favorite subject. He started studying science after his 10th class board exam and in 12th he passed with 92% marks. He then completed his graduation in Mathematics from Calcutta University, after completing his graduation he cleared the UPSC Union Public Civil Service Examination and was selected as an Indian IPS officer in 1989. His bureaucratic career began after he was selected as IPS in 1989. In the administrative history of West Bengal State Police, IPS Rajeev Kumar is prominently named as a conflicted officer. In 2002, he played a key role in West Bengal's Special Task Force to crack down on Maoists and crack down on counterfeit currency, becoming popular among police circles for his technology-driven investigations. Close liaison with STFs of Delhi and Mumbai police thereafter brought success to the operation.

In 2013, Rajeev Kumar was the head of the Special Task Force in the case of corruption of money laundering organization Chit Fund in West Bengal. Then in 2019, the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) raided Rajeev Kumar's house, after which the state politics heated up when the CBI wanted to interrogate him. After this controversy, he was appointed as the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Information Technology. He was appointed as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police in 2016, after which the state politics became turbulent which lasted for a long time. Then on December 27, 2023, the Chief Minister of the state released a list in which a total of five Dudke bureaucrats were transferred, one of whom was IPS Rajeev Kumar. Controversy :; - 

In the cabinet meeting on December 27, it was decided to promote IPS Rajeev Kumar to the post of DG of the state. Opposition leader Subvendu Adhikari has complained about why Rajeev Kumar, who is involved in the Sarada case, has been appointed as the director general of the state. Opposition Leader Subhendu Adhikari has given the resumption of the pending data loss case against Rajeev Kumar. Leader of Opposition Subvendu Adhikari wrote on his Twitter handle that the Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to Rajiv on the condition that Rajiv would help in all aspects of the investigation. But IPS Rajeev Kumar did not do so, hence the CBI appealed the Supreme Court to withdraw his interim bail, the case is still pending. It is very unfortunate that someone whose image is so questionable should be appointed to the highest position in the Raj's police force. Subhendu Adhikari raised the question that if the DG of the state is in trouble with the new law, then it will be good for the state.(Info)
