Vijay Kumar started his career as an IPS officer in 1997. He worked most of his life in Kashmir and surrounding areas of Pulwama, Awantripora, Kulgam, Anantnag. He has the expertise to conduct anti-terrorist and anti-Maoist operations in the Jammu and Kashmir cadre. In 2003, he was awarded the President's Medal for Gallantry for leading a highly daring operation. During the Haryana Jat movement in 2016, he performed outstanding acts of bravery while serving as DIG in the CRPF. During the assembly elections in 2018, he was given the task of coordinating the main force of CAPF. For his bravery in Assam and his skills, he has been awarded various titles and medals by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and the Central Government.
